Math---->Bubble burst!

For math class, i have the students count by 1's to 100 and than by 2's to 100 again. We counted by 5's and 10' and than 15's to 100. This was a great exercise to get fimiliar with counting in base tens twos, fives and fifteen. This exercise allowed me to move into odd and even numbers. We talked about what even and odd numbers were. As extra practice i handed out a worksheet that enable to color even numbers and odd numbers with two different colors. Than we went ahead and played a game online on the promethean board. This allows them to have fun while learning about odd and even numbers. This also allows them to interact with technology.

Science: Can we Change the Color of a celery?

Today's Lesson: Can we change the color of a celery?

STANDARD 5.1 (SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES) ALL STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP PROBLEM-SOLVING, DECISION-MAKING AND INQUIRY SKILLS, REFLECTED BY FORMULATING USABLE QUESTIONS AND HYPOTHESES, PLANNING EXPERIMENTS, CONDUCTING SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATIONS, INTERPRETING AND ANALYZING DATA, DRAWING CONCLUSIONS, AND COMMUNICATING RESULTS.

In class we dicussed the process of experiementing and talked about how it applied to us everyday. We talked about the plants and created a brace map to identify the parts of a plant and their functions. Going about this we did an celery experiment to help us better understand the functions of a plant.

Things we need:
  •  Tall Clear Glass jar
  • Water
  • Red Food coloring or other colors
  • Scissors
  • Observation sheet
  • Celery sticks with leaves
Get Observation Worksheet here: Celery Observation worksheet

Doing this experiment helps students better understand and observe how Plants use their roots to absorb water. Using the food color into water helps track where the water is going inside the celery.

Students first had to find a tall clar glass jar to add water into. Each team had two jars, one with plain water and the other with food color added to it. Next the team got two celery sticks with leaves and cut the buttom of the celery about 1/2 an inch. After this we talked about what we think might happen. The students drew a before and after perdictions.

Here are some pictures of our Little experiment the children enjoyed!

    Literacy-->Rhyming with the Cat

     Through the contrast of short-vowel patterns, this helps students' in use of analogy to apply their knowledge of vowel sounds in reading and spelling new words. The integration of Dr. Seuss rhymes creates an engaging study of onsets and rimes. Students will discover patterns in words, sort words based on their vowel patterns, and apply their knowledge in reading and writing activities.
    For their writing activities i have the students write a short introductions about themselves and have talk about what they have learn in class.

    Students have read the book below that lead to the activity of creating a "Cat in the hat" above.
